In January, we experienced three plumbing incidents related to toilet blockages across the community. The good news: all three were resolved quickly and without any backups into apartments. No units were damaged, and disruptions were kept minimal.

We’re sharing this update because we’ve seen an increase in toilet-related maintenance requests, and most of them trace back to what’s being flushed—not to aging pipes or system failure.

What Can and Cannot Be Flushed

Toilets are designed for just two things:

  • Human waste

  • Toilet paper (reasonable amounts)

Please do not flush:

  • “Flushable” wipes (they are not truly flushable)

  • Paper towels or napkins

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Diapers

  • Baby wipes or cleaning wipes

  • Cotton swabs, pads, or dental floss

  • Grease, food scraps, including sourdough or other dough-based food

  • Cat litter or any similar material

Even items that disappear when flushed can build up over time, causing clogs deep in the system that aren’t immediately visible.

Why This Matters (for Everyone)

Improper flushing can lead to:

  • Blocked sewer lines

  • Emergency maintenance calls

  • Temporary loss of bathroom use

  • Avoidable repair work

When plumbing issues are preventable, avoiding them helps:

  • Reduce disruptions for you and your neighbors

  • Keep maintenance response focused on true repairs and upgrades

  • Control long-term operating costs, which supports stable rents and continued property improvements

A Shared Responsibility

Plumbing systems in multifamily communities are shared infrastructure, and small daily habits make a big difference.

We truly appreciate residents who are already being mindful—and for everyone else, this is simply a helpful reminder. If you ever have questions about what’s safe to flush or notice slow drainage, please reach out early. Reporting small issues quickly often prevents bigger ones later.

Thank you for being part of a community that looks out for one another.
